The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has taken a decisive step by filing an interlocutory injunction application against the Electoral Commission (EC), aiming to halt the upcoming Ejisu by-election. This move follows a lawsuit initiated by Emmanuel Gallo, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the CPP, challenging the candidacy of Esther Osei in the by-election.
The lawsuit contends that the CPP formally communicated its decision not to participate in the by-election to the Electoral Commission on April 18. Among the reliefs sought by the party is a declaration that no Constituency Branch Conference has elected Esther Osei or any candidate for consideration as the CPP’s Parliamentary representative in the Ejisu Constituency by-election.
The CPP argues that Esther Osei, or any other candidate purportedly representing the party, has not been officially endorsed through the party’s internal processes as mandated by its constitution. The party insists that the selection of a parliamentary candidate should involve the Constituency Branch Party Conference, followed by approval from the Central Committee, which has not taken place in this instance.
In its legal action, the CPP seeks affirmation from the High Court that its Central Committee has not endorsed Esther Osei or any candidate for the Ejisu Constituency by-election. Furthermore, the party requests an injunction on the by-election until its claims are determined by the court.
