Liverpool Football Club has initiated discussions with Feyenoord’s head coach, Arne Slot, in a bid to secure him as the successor to Jürgen Klopp at Anfield, sources have revealed to ESPN. The move comes after a series of developments in the managerial hunt, including Xabi Alonso’s decision to stay at Bayer Leverkusen and a shift in interest away from Ruben Amorim of Sporting CP.
Arne Slot, aged 45, has emerged as the frontrunner for the prestigious role at Liverpool, with the club recognizing his potential amid competition from other European giants such as Bayern Munich and Barcelona. In light of this, Liverpool has made contact with Feyenoord, aiming to secure Slot’s services ahead of rival suitors.
Slot’s managerial credentials have attracted attention before, as evidenced by previous approaches from Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur. Despite tempting offers, Slot opted to extend his tenure with Feyenoord, guiding them to the Eredivisie title in the 2022-23 season.
Securing Slot’s signature won’t come cheap for Liverpool, as they would need to negotiate a compensation package in the vicinity of £9 million ($11.2 million) to release him from his contract, which currently extends until 2026.
Michael Edwards, instrumental in bringing Klopp to Liverpool in 2015 during his tenure as sporting director, is spearheading the search for Klopp’s successor in his capacity as head of football for Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s ownership.
Liverpool’s focus remains divided as they prepare to face Merseyside rivals Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday. Klopp’s side is eager to secure victory and narrow the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal, who recently surged ahead with a commanding 5-0 triumph over Chelsea.
